uMgungundlovu District, KwaZulu-Natal

uMgungundlovu district municipality is home to Pietermaritzburg, the capital city of KwaZulu-Natal. Pietermaritzburg is the second largest city in the province after eThekwini. Other towns in the district include Mooi River, Howick, Richmond and Camperdown. The district has well-established infrastructure and includes some traditional authority areas. There is a strong network of civil society organisations in Pietermaritzburg and surrounds, many of which provide services and support to children and their families. While a range of services are available in the cities and larger towns, access is more limited in the smaller towns and rural areas.

Children make up 40% of the district population.1 Some 93% of school-aged children (7 – 17 years) are reported to be attending school.2 Almost half (47%) of the children in this district live in rural areas.3 The map below shows where the children live (by ward, with darker areas indicating more children) and where selected services are located. Click on the purple legend in the bottom right-hand corner to select services. To view details, click within the ward or on the coloured dots.

Data

Notes 1. The child population per ward is calculated using the 2011 Census data and 2011 ward boundaries. The updated 2016 district boundaries have been used to create this map, resulting in minor discrepancies due to changes in the municipal boundaries between the two periods.
