Nkangala District, Mpumalanga
Definition
Nkangala is the smallest of the three district municipalities in Mpumalanga. The district is known for its coal mines, power stations and agriculture, and is considered the economic hub of the province. The industrial and agricultural towns of Middelburg and eMalahleni (Witbank) are located here, as well as numerous smaller towns and villages. Children make up over a third (35%) of the population in the district.1 Two in five children (42%) in the district live in rural areas and almost all (95%) children aged 7 to 17 years are in school.2
